FCA grew from a number of conversations between artists in Accra in 2002-2003 concerning the lack of supportive networks for the art community within the West African context. FCA was founded by Virginia Ryan and 21 founding members representing artists, gallery owners, academics and patrons of the arts.

After a year of events and exhibitions during which the form of the FCA took shape, FCA was formally launched in October 2004, at an inaugural seminar “Facing the Mirror : does contemporary art reflect contemporary society?” . In March 2005, the founder members established FCA’s Constitution, appointed the Advisory Board and elected the members of the Executive Council in March 2005.

FCA is incorporated as a limited liability company (Reg. No. G-13,387; 12th May 2004). It is also registered as an NGO with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Reg.No. A.026/10/194, 28th April 2005)   and with the Department of Social Welfare (Reg.No. DSW 2523).

'FCA is the only foundation of its kind in Ghana. It is dedicated to supporting the development of young artists.it offers artists a badly needed place to brainstormlearn about the international art scene and keep in contact with the World'
